Stunt kites are obviously for the sole purpose of doing stunts. Although flying stunt kites is easy, doing some of the stunts are extremely difficult. The hardest stunts are the ones that have to be accurate like skimming the grass with the kite flying along at around 20mph or more or (low to the ground) power dives.

How To Control Stunt Kites

You control your stunt kite with two lines of string and by moving one hand back or forward you can make the kite move left or right. Right hand to go right left hand to go left (simple).

Stunt Kite handles

There are two main types of stunt kite handles the first is the kind that you get with your kite the second are ones that you make yourself.

Standard Handles

The handles that you get with your stunt kite are good for wrapping up the kite string around it and they are ok for people who don't fly in very windy situations. If the weather gets very windy the kite can pull very hard and is possible to hurt your hands allot. If you are using a delta kite the wind can almost lift you off the ground like a Power kite, So I don't recommend the standard handles. If you are going to use the standard handles I recommend wearing gloves.

DIY Handles

The DIY handles allow greater grip and control over the stunt kite that you are controlling. The DIY handles are very easy to make all you need is a strong bag strap and a needle and thread. What you do is cut the strap into two equal parts and make two circles with them. After that is done you can either put a clip or keyring ring on it to hold the string on or you can just tie the string to the handles when there done. Once the ring is on or if you choose not to then you sow each end of the strap parts together to create two circles of the same size. And then congratulations you have your very own DIY kite handles.

Flying Window

The Flying window is everywhere where the kite can go with you in a fixed position on the ground.

Wind Speed

The ideal flying wind speed is between 7-18mph.

Where To Fly

Beaches, Parks, Rolling hills, Parks and any Open places are ideal. Away from power lines, Phone lines, Thunderstorms, Airports and a lot of people because the delta kites can pick up a lot of speed.

Types Of Stunt Kites

DIAMOND

Diamond kites are obviously diamond shape and are an excellent beginners stunt kite. Diamond kites in general have a very long tail to way the bottom of the kite down. In stunts the tails look excellent because if the kite does a loop then the tail does a loop and it creates an excellent aerial display.

DELTA

Delta kites are a triangular shape and are for beginners to intermediate stunt kite flyers. With adjusting the bridal on the Delta kites you can either make the kite go faster, slower and/or more maneuverable.

HYDROFOIL

Hydrofoils are a long wing that fills up with air and are for intermediate to advanced flyers. These kites are basically Power kites if the wind is willing it is very possible for these kites to pull you off of the ground but you don't keep going you come back down after a few feet (but cool huh).

QUADS

Quad lined stunt kites are different from the rest of the stunt kites in the way that they have four lines rather than two. These stunt kites are for the advanced flyers only. I have to admit I don't know a thing about these types of kites but they look psycho.

Multi Kites

It is also possible to connect most stunt kites together to create a long line of kites to control. Don't mix types of kites e.g. Diamond with Delta.

Launching

Diamond Kite With Two People

  1. Have the wind coming from behind you.
  2. Have both lines an equal length.
  3. Ask someone to hold it in the air and let go.
  4. When they let go pull both lines to make the kite climb.

Diamond Kite With One Person

  1. Have the wind coming from behind you.
  2. Have both lines an equal length.
  3. Hold the kite strings that are right next to the kite.
  4. Make sure the kite strings are at an equal length in your hands.
  5. Let the kite pull the strings carefully through your hands.
  6. When the kite string handles reach you pull back to make the kite climb.
  7. Carefully hold the handles properly in your hands.

Delta Kite (You only need one person)

  1. Have the wind coming from behind you.
  2. Lay the kite on its back.
  3. Have both lines an equal length.
  4. Gently pull both lines so that the kite stands up.
  5. Pull both lines to make the kite lift up and climb into the air.

Landing

Make the kite go to one side of the flying window and very gently bring it to the ground once its down take one step forward so that the lines have allot of slack (otherwise the kite may take off).

Stunts and how to do them

Loops

Start in the upright position by having both of your hands parallel then gently pull one hand back and the kite will start to loop. To stop the loop put the hand back to where it started from and reverse the loop to untangle the lines.

Spirals

Do the same as loops but hold the hand back a while longer.

Figure Of Eight

Start in the upright position and pull one hand back until the kite has completed one loop then put that hand back to where it was whilst pulling back the other hand until the kite has completed another loop then put your hands back to the starting position.

Dives

Start in the upright position and pull one hand back until the nose of the kite is facing downwards (the kite will then fall toward the ground) then put that hand back where it was and bring the other hand back at the same time. When the kite is facing up straighten up and pull both kite strings at the same time to get back up in the air.

Power Dives

Same as above but on the way down pull the kite strings to pick up speed then pull up close to the ground still pulling on the lines and you will get a lot of power out of the kite.

Boxed Loops

Start in the upright position and then quickly pull one of the strings and then quickly put it back to the starting position and do that 4 times leaving a very short gap between turns and the end result is a box shaped flying sequence.

Cutting the grass

Start in the upright position and go to one side of your flying window. Turn the kite toward the ground by pulling one of the lines. Once you are near the ground, straighten out so that the nose of the kite is facing the direction you wish to fly and with one of the lines you can get closer and closer to the ground. When you are near to the end of your window straighten up to get back to the up right position.

Accidental Bounce

When in flight and near the ground it is possible that something can go wrong and you will hit the floor when you do quickly try to straighten out the kite and pull back on the lines and you should hopefully fly back into the air.

Flips

(Delta Kites Only)

Start in the upright position at one side of your flying window about half way up. Quickly pull one hand back and the other hand forward at the same time and the kite will do an unstable 360 turn then pull back on the lines to regain control.

Bouncing

(Delta Kites Only)

Same as above except you do it very low to the ground so that at the end of the flip the kite hits the floor almost landing then you pull back to get it into the air.

Snake

(Diamond Kites Only)

Start up high and then constantly pull the handles left then right left the right and the tail will look like a snake.

Twists

(Delta Kites Only)

Start in the upright position then pull one hand back and the other hand forward very quickly and the kite will start to twist (a twist is when one corner of the kite stays in a fixed position). To stop the twist put the hand back to where it started from and reverse the twist to untangle the lines or you can loop or spiral it back.
